Industry News

It has been an interesting few weeks in the ticketing space. Ticket prices keep hitting all-time highs across music and sports, listening-only tickets are apparently now a thing and blockchain-based tickets continue to pick up steam. Here are a few of the articles we have been reading:

Main Story

Who can really afford tickets anymore?

The answer is a smaller and smaller group of people, that seemingly shrinks day by day. The Average American makes $76,370 annually before tax, which depending on where they live could turn into a lot less. Spending thousands of dollars on a concert ticket is certainly out of the question for most, as it falls into one of those non-essential spending categories.

Yet ticket pricing across all events continues to reach all-time highs. Taylor Swift’s current Eras tour is the most obvious example.

While face value tickets for the Eras Tour tickets all fell within the $49 to $499 range, you couldn’t find anything on the secondary market within that range. On the secondary market, tickets ranged from $500 to $7000 a seat based on the market and time of purchase.

The issue stretches well beyond the Eras Tour. Other musicians like Morgan Wallen, the country artist, saw his tickets reach $300+ on the secondary market for his Fenway shows just to get in the door.

Sports is no different and shockingly, MLS has seen an incredible boost in demand with Leonel Messi’s arrival to the league. The MLS Leagues Cup, which doesn’t even have any real meaning, had tickets priced close to $450 on the secondary market for the worst seats in the building.

To me, this data demands a shift for artists, teams and event producers to start figuring out how to ensure their real fans can afford tickets. Knowing who your true fans are and rewarding them for their loyalty is very much doable today and would lead to happier fans, while still maintaining revenue for the artists and teams. In a world where artists and teams are generally not sharing in secondary market revenue, there is no reason not to do anything they can to ensure the people who care the most are rewarded for their loyalty.
